fAIr LAC announces LATAM wide call to advance responsible and ethical technology practices

The responsible and ethical use of technology is crucial in ensuring that is used to benefit society as a whole, rather than harming individuals or exacerbating existing inequalities. This requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in the development, deployment, and use of technology. It also means considering the potential risks and unintended consequences of technology, and taking steps to mitigate these risks.

In the search of that, and as part of its commitment to fostering innovation in Latin America and the Caribbean, IDB Lab - the innovation laboratory of the IDB Group - has launched the fAIr LAC initiative to promote the development and responsible use of artificial intelligence in the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

fAIr LAC is a collaborative effort between various stakeholders in Latin America and the Caribbean region, including government officials, business leaders, academics, and civil society organizations. The goal of this alliance is to promote the development and implementation of AI technologies that are both socially responsible and ethically sound.

By working together, these stakeholders hope to create an ecosystem that supports innovation while also ensuring that the benefits of AI are widely shared and that the potential risks are minimized.

Objectives

Ensuring that those affected by an AI system understand the outcome and enabling those affected by an AI system to claim their rights

Regional Hubs

To advance its mission of promoting responsible and ethical AI practices across Latin America and the Caribbean, fAIr LAC has established four regional hubs: one in Jalisco, Mexico to serve as a benchmark for North America; one in Costa Rica for Central America; one in Colombia for the Andean region; and one in Uruguay for the Southern Cone.

By supporting the growth of these hubs, fAIr LAC aims to create a network of leaders and innovators who can drive positive change throughout the region.
