He has also worked as a researcher at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS) and served as a visiting professor at institutions such as Harvard and MIT.
At Tecnológico de Monterrey, Álvarez has been a key figure in the Advanced Biofabrication Initiative and has published over 150 scientific articles. He has also co-authored several patents in biotechnology.
